Key points

The word feminisms is written intentionally as plural, to denote the multiplicity of feminist approaches to thinking about and researching women’s struggles and issues.

Originally, feminists cited waves, such as the first wave of feminism, which refers to events at the end of the 19th century into the beginning of the 20th century, when suffragettes in New Zealand, Australia and the UK engaged in political action to secure for women the right to vote.

The first wave of feminisms refers also to the time before, during and after both World Wars, consequently, women’s issues during the first wave of feminisms included not only their rights to vote, but also ongoing issues related to women’s equal status in society, including their rights for equal recognition and benefits in the workforce, their rights to be educated, and a voice in the determination of their reproductive issues, such as contraception and abortion.
